The Bible and Private Property
One of the most basic freedoms reiterated throughout the pages of the Bible is the right to own property. The eighth commandment (Thou shalt not steal - Exo. 20:15) assumes private property ownership. So does Isaiah 61:8, which says “I hate robbery and iniquity.” Deuteronomy 27:17 requires God’s people to affirm private property rights or be cursed (“Cursed be he that removes his neighbor’s landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen.”). Fraudulent business practices which violated private property rights are prohibited by texts such as Lev. 19:35,36, Deut. 25:13-16, Prov. 20:10,23 and Hosea 12:7.
