Measure 26
Amends Constitution: Changes the principles that Govern Laws for Punishment of Crime

Our fundamental principles articulated above noted that the Bible (and the historic church) says the primary function of the civil government is to punish evildoers. This measure would move Oregon to a more biblical concept of criminal justice. We strongly recommend a YES vote!!

"Yes" vote repeals vindictive justice prohibition, adds responsibility, accountability, societal protection to criminal punishment principles.

"No" vote retains constitutional provision basing laws for criminal punishment on reformation, not vindictive justice.

SUMMARY: This measure amends the state constitution. The constitution now provides that laws for the punishment of crime must be based on principles of reformation, and not of vindictive justice. The measure would delete that language. It would insert language stating that laws for the punishment of crime must be based on these principles: protection of society, personal responsibility, accountability for one's actions and reformation.
