Requires balancing timber production, resource conservation/preservation in managing state forests; specifically addresses two forests.

PEAPAC Explanation:
This would significantly restrict sales of timber from state forest lands, insisting that more of these forests be dedicated to conservation. It would also lock up half of the forest land in Tillamook and Clatsop counties.

PEAPAC Comment:
Jobs, homes and income are vital for families. According to official state estimates, this radical environmentalist measure would cost Oregon taxpayers 23 to 36 million dollars a year. It would also take valuable timber off the market, increasing the cost of wood products, and decreasing employment. Oregon’s timber industry has been hit and hit hard over the years by those who believe our primary responsibility is to keep the earth unchanged. But the Bible tells us that God placed a gardener in Eden, not a caretaker. Man is called to improve the world, to use its resources for godly purposes. We already have park land designated for old growth trees and recreation. This Measure attacks both the home-building industry and those who labor to put food on the table for their family. And, amazingly, it also attacks the very forests it claims to want to protect. Evidence is clear that a “do noting” approach to forests leaves them highly vulnerable to forest fires. We strongly recommend a No vote on Measure 34.
